To make young children understand what the mystery of life might not be easy. However, this should somewhat impress older people who have more experience in life, so I would like to continue to present my theory.

The opposite constitution of hepatonia is pulmotonia. Individuals with this constitution also inherit their body type from either one of the parents and are born in a fixed period of time in which other constitutions cannot be born. From the universal point of view, it belongs to the opposite direction of hepatonia, the southwest spatially, and to the first day of autumn temporally, thus having strong lungs, which is considered to be the “golden” organ.

Having strong lungs not only means that their lungs are strong in their function but also means that they are bigger in size than individuals of other constitutions. It is not because they are of a larger stature than others. Even short pulmotonia individuals have bigger lungs than tall people, and their lungs are larger than any other organs in their body. This is why this constitution was named pulmotonia.

​

In the hepatonia constitution, the liver as the strongest organ takes the lead in controlling the body’s condition. However, although the lungs are the strongest organ in pulmotonia individuals, they are not the primary organs which manages the whole condition of the body. In both constitutions, the liver is the responsible organ for all kinds of diseases that those who have these constitutions might suffer from.

The reason for this is that just as there are a ruling party and opposition parties in the democratic government, there is a ruling party in our body, which are the major six organs, and the opposition party is the four minor organs. In case of the hepatonia constitution, the ruling party is composed of strong and active organs in their body and the leader of this ruling party is the liver. However, in case of the pulmotonia constitution, the ruling party is composed of weak organs and the liver as the weakest organ plays the most critical role in controlling the body condition. Although the liver is the weakest organ and is the antagonist to the lungs, which are the strongest organs in pulmotonia individuals, it nevertheless is the biggest responsibility within the ruling party.

As I have mentioned before, in the constitutional medicine, acupuncture therapy is administered by considering which organ is the most influential organ in each patient. For both the hepatonia and the pulmotonia constitutions the most influential organ is the liver. The difference, though, is that for the hepatonia cosntitution, the treatment is given to restrain the overactive function of the liver so that may not affect other parts of the body negatively. For the pulmotonia constitution, the treatment is designed to help the liver to be strengthened and to delivered from the suppression of the lungs.

The following story might sound fabricated, so I could not tell this to anyone for a long time. An incident that happened recently might prove this to be true. There was a young pediatrician who came up with an idea that there must be other ways to cure diseases other than common medicine. He began to research various fields of medicine such as rehabilitation medicine, traditional acupuncture therapy, taping method, and so forth. After working on the taping method some time, he found out that when patients are treated with colored tapes, a certain color worked positively for some people while causing side effects for others. As he was investigating the cause of this phenomenon, he heard about the eight constitution theory and started to wonder if the effectiveness of the tape had any relation to the constitution of the body. After many experiments with people, he found out that the blue colored tape worked positively for the hepatonia constitution but caused side effects in the cholocystonia constitution. At the same time, another colored tape worked well for the pulmotonia constitution but caused side effects in the colonotonia constitution. Based on the results of the experiments, he concluded that the taping method had nothing to do with constitutions.

 

But what surprised him afterwards was that the blue tape worked for the hepatonia and the pulmotonia constitutions, which have the liver as the key organ in treating diseases. Likewise, among the rest of six constitutions he could pair up three sets of two constitutions that have the same primary organ and the same effective color. When he realized this, he came to me and asked why I established the constitutional acupuncture treatment the way I did. I told him that the symbol for both the liver and blue is Mauk (木, tree). For the hepatonia constitution, blue colored tape works by absorbing all the poison in the liver that has spread throughout the body, and for the pulmotonia constitution, it works by reinforcing the liver weakened by the poison from the strong lungs. The constitutional acupuncture treatment for both the hepatonia and the pulmotonia constitution also work in the same principle, and the way the acupuncture treatment works is even more mysterious.

Although the same colored tape works for both the hepatonia and the pulmotonia constitutions, they are two totally opposite constitutions: one is of the northeast and the other is of the southwest. When it comes to their physical shape, hepatonia individuals are large in stature and their low and middle part of the body is big. Also, they tend to have a temperamental personality. On the contrary, pulmotonia individuals are small in body size and their upper part of the body is large. Most of them have a phlegmatic personality. Hepatonia individuals are born with high blood pressure, thus they are able to live with having the maximum 180mmHg and the minimum 90mmHg of blood pressure.

 

However, pulmotonia individuals are born with low blood pressure, so they stay healthy with the maximum 80mmHg and the minimum 40mmHg. Hepatonia individuals remain healthy by eating meat and are badly affected by eating fish. On the other hand, pulmotonia individuals remain healthy by eating fish and vegetables, while eating excessive amounts of meat can cause them to contract various diseases such as Leukemia, aplastic anemia, atopic dermatitis and Gilliam Bare syndrome. Hepatonia individuals should work up a sweat through hot baths, but pulmotonia individuals should avoid sweating by taking cold baths. Whereas dextrose injections are harmful to the hepatonia constitution, they work as the only medicine and a good nutrient for the pulmotonian constitution. Similarly, gold renders a great benefit for the hepatonia constitution, while it is poisonous to the pulmotonia constitution. Hepatonia individuals are realistic and venturesome, while pulmotonia individuals tend to be idealistic and creative.

Hepatonia and pulmotonia individuals are completely opposite in every aspect, but they both have the liver as the target of constitutional acupuncture treatment. Blue tape works positively for both constitutions, and when they get together, they always feel satisfied and healthy.

​

Some may think that it is a mere accident that people are born in a certain way and that we cannot draw definite distinctions between people's constitutions. However, although animals of the same species are basically the same, human beings have constitutional differences that are hard to understand. This is why democracy that respects human beings' individuality and human rights should be practiced. This also is a human mystery that creates difference among people in their life style such as exercise, occupation, nutrition, and regimen and treatment of diseases, which can be understood only when we know about the body constitutions. If you realize this principle, you can be a wise person who can accommodate others. Otherwise, it is easy for you to become a stubborn and selfish authoritarian.
